WSOP History    List of WSOP winners

Johnny Moss and Benny BinionThe World Series of Poker has been played since 1970, and today it’s unquestionably the biggest of poker tournaments. The event was started by Benny Binion who gathered the world’s best poker players in his casino, Binion’s Horseshoe, in Las Vegas. In the first year only seven players took part in the WSOP. The legendary Johnny Moss won an unknown amount of money following a vote among the participating players. Already in the second year, the freezeout tournament structure was introduced. Once again Johnny Moss triumphed, defeating five opponents. Joseph HachemMoss got $30,000 in prize money (the winner took all).

The number of entrants grew gradually over the years and in 1982 over 100 people played in the WSOP. This time Jack Straus won $520,000. The WSOP continued to slowly gain popularity, but it would take around 20 years before the interest really exploded. In 2003, 839 players participated, and the tournament was won by online poker qualifier Chris Moneymaker. His $2,500,000 win really made an impact - people all over the world suddenly realized the possibilities poker offered. Prize MoneyIn 2004, 2,575 players entered the WSOP, in 2005 the number was 5,619 and in 2006 the amount of players had reached 8,773. The development has been absolutely astonishing and there are actually no signs of a decrease in the interest.
